Save on Fossil Fuels with Hybrid Cars and Hybrid SUVs

Environmental concerns and fuel economy are making Hybrid vehicles more popular. See some of America's new hybrid cars, including hybrid SUVs.

The American public is getting more aware of the environment every day. They are also more aware of the problems caused by fossil fuels, especially their diminishing reserves and ever increasing prices.

Americans are now beginning to realize that buying hybrid cars can contribute to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, save on fossil fuels and more importantly, cut down on the cost of driving. Some of the best selling hybrid vehicles, including hybrid SUVs are listed below.

Toyota Prius

According to the joint DOE-EPA Fuel Economy website, the Toyota Prius is the most fuel efficient car sold in the U.S. It gives on average 48 miles to the gallon. Figures released by Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. in Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., Ca. on Jan. 3, 2008 show that the Prius outsells all other hybrids put together. The Prius has style, safety and economy to spare. Although the tax incentives on hybrid cars provided by the government has run out on Toyota models (they have sold too many), the Prius continues to sell in large numbers, even outselling some non hybrid models.

Nissan Altima Hybrid

Described by Nissan as "the first hybrid that drives like a Nissan”, the Altima combines the modern sedan style with all the benefits of a fuel efficient car. Although poorly equipped with extras, it is stylish and gives a good balance between economy and performance. Unfortunately it is only available in eight states at the moment.

Honda Civic Hybrid

In the joint DOE-EPA mileage statistics, the Honda Civic comes right next to the Prius, at 45 mpg. It is more of a compact car than the Prius but is a very comfortable family car. It has a super-efficient 1.3-liter, 8-valve, 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a lightweight, high-output electric motor, which adds extra power when needed. This green car is a fuel efficient car with oodles of style.

Ford Escape Hybrid

For people who like their “off road” vehicles and still want to save on gas, the best hybrid SUV could be the Ford Escape Hybrid. According to DOE-EPA Fuel Economy website the Ford Escape Hybrid is the most efficient hybrid SUV on the market. It has a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a pair of electric motors, which together output a net 155 horses. It is a versatile and efficient vehicle, combines the benefits of a SUV with the fuel savings of a hybrid vehicle.

Lexus RX 400h

Hybrid cars are not just confined to the economy models. Automakers are finding that there is a growing market for hybrids in the luxury bracket as well. Toyota’s Lexus RX 400h is just such a luxury hybrid SUV. The RX 400h has a 3.3-liter V-6 engine and the latest version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. This Lexus can operate in a variety of modes. It can be gas-only, electric-only, or a combination of the two. It has as much luxury as its gasoline equivalent but with a higher mileage rate.

GM Sierra Hybrid

Americans like and need their pickup trucks, the workhorse of much of the country. General Motors is trying very hard to push the full-sized pickup truck over the 20 mpg mark and they claim that their Sierra Hybrid does this and is the most efficient full-size pickup truck on the market. The Sierra also features reduced emissions and unique accessory power capability, without any sacrifice in load-carrying, towing and grade-climbing capability.

Whether a consumer needs a compact car, a sedan, luxury model, SUV or a working pickup truck, there is now a greener option out there for all these models. Hybrid cars save on gas, cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and can save lots of money while still maintaining the joys and luxuries of normal driving.
